INTERMEDIATE HURLING Clara 3-10 Killurin 2-6 Venue- Ballinamere 7.30pm 07 May 2009. “Clara emerge victorious in Dogfight” In a game played in conditions more suited to January, Clara not firing on all cylinders managed to take maximum points. After a scrappy start Killurin actually took the lead on 5mins from a pointed free and their next score would not come for another 10mins. On 9mins Lorcan Hiney scored a fine point from play followed up on 12mins by a classic poachers goal from Ross Brady who doubled on a high ball sent in by Christy Fla. A minute later Kevin Meehan would add another goal which was compounded by some terrible goalkeeping from the Killurin stopper. Meehan now in his stride added another fine point from play while Killurin got a point sandwiched between two frees scored by Fla. With the ground starting to cut up badly ground hurling was very difficult and the game as a spectacle suffered and after a wayward Killurin ball Clara won a sideline which Joey Deehan managed to dispatch to the onion bag, the keeper having gone for tea or something. The half would draw to a close with two pointed frees for Killurin and a yellow card for Fla in what the ref Noel Cooney deemed to be a wild swing. It was evident that after a tour of duty
overseas with the army Fla has not regained his marksman accuracy or
sharpness yet but will soon (we hope). The score at half time read Clara
3-4 Killurin 0-4. On the resumption Killurin got the perfect start with a goal on 31mins and the game was now put to Clara who went into rest mode for the next five minutes allowing Killurin to come at them ,and but for some wayward shooting the scoreline would have painted a different picture. Clara would lose Fla on 35mins for a second yellow card for a late pull which was preceeded by a saved free which must have frustrated him, as I cant remember Fla been sent off during his distinguished career. Clara's response was an excellent point scored from 60 yards from the stick of the cool and calm Tommo Deehan (41mins). Killurin scored a fine point on 43mins from a sideline also which gave the whole team and supporters a lift as they came at Clara again with great gusto, but their shooting would again be their downfall. On 46mins Killurin pointed a free followed by an opportunist goal after a scramble on 50mins. Clara needed to respond and did so courtesy of two finely taken frees by Joey Deehan followed by a superb sideline on 57mins. The latter would complete his tally on 58mins with another free. The final score read Clara 3-10 Killurin 2-6. To sum up this match credit should be given to both teams for effort in such bad conditions and Clara won in third gear but no doubt Banjo will have them firing for the many tough challenges that lie ahead. Scorers for Clara- Joey Deehan 1-5(3fr,2s/l and 1pt from play), Kevin Meehan 1-1, Christy Flanagan 2f, Ross Brady 1gl, Lorcan Hiney and Tommo Deehan 1pt each. The Merry Magpie.
