U21 FOOTBALL CLARA 3-13  ST.MANCHAN GAELS 3-08

FRI 20TH FEB 2009

Clara started the match with the bare 15, but it looked a strong team on paper. Just after the throw-in clara went a point down to St Manchans and we got a brief look at the pace of the opposition, and knew this would be a tough one. Clara broke up the field then and a bad effort for a point fell short into the keepers arms who mis-handled it and let it slip by him into the back of the net for Clara’s opening score. This seemed to settle Clara who started to dominate the middle of the field with some find fielding by Ross Brady and good support play by Paul Deehan. Paul Mitchell had things under control at center back and was breaking the hearts of the St. Manchans defence with some pacey runs down the middle and on one of these runs he got the ball back from Sean Kelly and finished it to the net. Joey Deehan was in fine shooting form and only missed one of his chances in the first half, he was well supported by John Ledwith and Graham Guilfoyle. Clara seemed to be breezing through the match at this stage and went in at half time leading by 3-8 to 0-2. St. Manchans got off to a flyng start in the second half hitting the back off Clara’s net early through some good play by Richard Dunne and Bernard Allen.  Clara seemed to lose all shape at this stage and only took control of the game again with 5 minutes to go.

They held off a strong Manchans challenge to win by 3-13 to 3-8. It was a good night for football weather wise and the pitch in Tober was again in marvelous condition but Noel Brady and Willie Reynolds have a lot of work to do yet to equal the heights of last years under 21s. We wish them the best of luck in the championship and it was great to have our GAA season kicked off with a win. Well done lads!
