TOM NAUGHTON U8 INDOOR HURLING REPORTS
2009 TOM NAUGHTON U8 INDOOR HURLING FINALS C FINAL - BER COWEN CUP Kilbride V Woodfield In the first final of the night, a very determined Kilbride team overcame the challenge of Woodfield on a score line of 8-1. As with so many games over the years, the score does not reflect how close the game actually was and Woodfield will feel that Lady Luck had abandoned them for the night. For Kilbride, the foundation for this victory was firmly laid in their defence where their captain Ciaran Ennis produced his best performance of the league and chipped in with a few crucial goals also. Beside him Conor Minnock was rock solid, putting a quick end to many of the Woodfield attacks. In goals, Lee Tierney showed once again that it would take something special from the opposition to beat him and the fact that he only conceded one goal on the night is proof of that. In midfield, Kai Dunne worked tirelessly and fought hard for possession, whilst Dylan Taylor was on hand to score some vital goals. Up front, both Patrick Phelan and Stephen Roe were magnificent for Kilbride and between them they accounted for four of their team’s eight goals. For Woodfield, Adam Carroll and Adam O’Keeffe were both outstanding in defence, intercepting and stopping numerous Kilbride attacks. Jack Flanagan in goals also had a great game and made some excellent stops. In midfield, captain Christopher Rabbette worked tirelessly for his team, covering every square centimetre of the pitch. In attack, Adam McCloskey and Aaron Wynne were flying but despite their best efforts the goals would just not go in. So in the end it was Kilbride who claimed the first silverware of the night. B FINAL – TOMMY DOLAN CUP Kilcoursey V Clashawaun The second final of the night was a fantastic, close fought encounter with Kilcoursey eventually getting the upper hand to overcome the challenge of the excellent Clashawaun team on a score-line of 9-7. Clashawaun got off to a great start and were 4-2 up by half time thanks to two great goals by Michael Daly, with the other two coming from their captain Cormac Delaney who was in flying form. Kilcoursey just about stayed in touch with a goal from a free by their captain James Moran and an unfortunate own goal from the stick of Barry Egan. Goalie Lochlann Morcambe put in a massive nights work for his Clashawaun team; with a number of terrific saves in both halves. In front of him, Dion Conroy and Barry Egan were paying out of their skins by stopping numerous Kilcoursey attacks. The midfield partnership of Cormac Delaney and Ronan Newman were winning the battle in that part of the field and up front the very impressive Michael Daly and Cian Handy were causing all sorts of problems for the Kilcoursey defence. As has come to be expected, Aodhan Moran stood defiant in the Kilcoursey goal and gave nothing away. And in front of him Chad Tobello, Alex Cornally and Marcus Dalton fought desperately to keep their team in with a shout coming up to half time. This certainly was a game “of two halves” as Kilcoursey stepped it up a gear or two in the 2nd half. With goals coming from James Moran, the ever impressive Lorcan Cornally and a few from the excellent Mikey Gaffey Kilcoursey ran out 9-7 winners to claim the Tommy Dolan cup. A FINAL – TOM NAUGHTON CUP Aughamore V Ballinough The last final of the night was an absolute thriller as Aughamore took on their closest rivals Ballinough. The action was non-stop and end to end - with nothing separating the teams going into the last few minutes. Eventually it was the men from Aughamore who came out on top on a score of 7-5. The game was very tight from the start with both captains, Conor Doan of Aughamore and Shane Gavin of Ballinough, leading by example and driving their teams on from the back. It was Aughamore who struck first with an excellent gaol from the stick of the impressive Adam Kelly and very soon after their all-star midfielder Aaron Tuohy added a second. But Ballinough did not panic and the ever dependable Jack Reynolds pulled one back before Conor Dolan made it 3-1 going into the break. In the 2nd half both teams gave it 120 percent and the large attendance was on the edge of their seats as Ballinough began to eat into Aughamore’s lead. In goal, James Rabbette was saving every thing that was coming his way and in front of him Liam Dignam was magnificent. The inspiring Shane Gavin was also in top form and in midfield Edward Cullen began to turn the tide in Ballinough’s favour and added a super goal also. Luke Kennedy was also working his socks off and up front Jack Reynolds was tormenting the Aughamore defence – rattling in three goals in the 2nd half. But if a team ever needed leaders then Aughamore had them in abundance. Ciaran Rooney was simply brilliant in goal and Conor Dolan gave an exhibition of full-back play in front of him whilst at the same time stepping up to score the last two goals for his team. In midfield Aaron Tuohy was playing out of his skin and the ever energetic Eoin Gavin was literally everywhere. Adam Kelly was on hand to score some vitally goals for his team and the young Conor Doyle, despite a serious injury, was also outstanding working hard for his team. In the end it was Aughamore who went on to claim the Tom Naughton Cup. The night ended with Tommy Lynam, Sec, Bord Na nOg presenting the Ber Cowen Cup to Ciaran Ennis of Kilbride, Mrs. Nancy Dolan presented James Moran of Kilcoursey with the Tommy Dolan Cup and John Naughton presented the Tom Naughton Cup to Conor Dolan of Aughamore. A big thank you to Fr. Keary PP who presented each child with their medal. Again we would like to thank Clara GAA Club for sponsoring jerseys and medals that each child received and for providing the GAA social centre to stage such an exciting underage event. Of course a big thank you to our referee Seamus Fleming who did an excellent job over the last six weeks. Thanks also to Clara Bord Na nOg for their support, and to Sean O'Brien who showed up each week to help to coach the kids during each game. Of course a big thank you to all the managers of teams and all the parents who brought their kids every week. The indoor hurling season has ended and U8 outdoor hurling will begin after Easter.
2009 TOM NAUGHTON U8 INDOOR HURLING REPORT – Round 4 Last Tuesday 24th February Clara GAA Club hosted another exciting round of the Tom Naughton Under-8 indoor hurling league. With only one round remaining after this round before the finals, it was all to play for as each team battled it out with three very close and exciting games. CLASHAWAUN V KILBRIDE The first game of the night, between Clashawaun and Kilbride, was a classic game of end to end hurling and finished in a 4-4 draw. This was, without doubt, the fairest result as both teams gave it everything from the start. Ronan Newman was outstanding in the backline for Clashawaun and was greatly assisted by Dion Conroy with ‘goalie’ Lochlann Morcombe making some crucial saves. In midfield, Cian Handy worked tirelessly and fought hard for possession, whilst Cormac Delaney was on hand to score some vital goals. Up front, Michael Daly and Barry Egan played extremely well and made life very difficult for the Kilbride backline. For Kilbride, Lee Tierney gave a ‘man of the match’ performance in goal with a number of excellent saves. In front of him, Patrick Phelan and Conor Minnock (who scored a tremendous goal) were rock solid and gave little away. Their midfield pairing of Kai Dunne and captain Ciaran Ennis were winning their individual battles and this ensured a great supply of ball to the superb Stephen Roe who banged in three goals for his team. So in the end a draw and a great start to the night’s hurling. BALLINOUGH V WOODFIELD The second match was another close fought encounter with Ballinough eventually overcoming the challenge of the excellent Woodfield team on a score-line of 9-5. The 1st half ended all square at 3 goals each with the 3 “Adams” all on target for Woodfield - Adam McCloskey, Adam Carroll and a brilliant strike by Adam O’Keeffe. Jack Flanagan, in goals, was called into action on numerous occasions and pulled off some top class saves. Ballinough stayed in touch in the 1st half with Jack Reynolds adding 3 more goals to his impressive tally so far in the league. With Luke Kennedy in defence stopping numerous Woodfield attacks and Edward Cullen playing out of his skin at midfield Ballinough knew they were still in with a shout at the break. The 2nd half was also very even as Mark Bennett drove Woodfield on from the back with countless clearances. In midfield captain Christopher Rabbette was winning his battle and up front Aaron Wynne was causing all sorts of problems for the Ballinough defence. Ballinough can thank their outstanding goalkeeper James Rabbitte for keeping them in the game at this crucial stage with several top class saves. With only minutes remaining on the clock Ballinough captain Shane Gavin grabbed hold of the game and scored two vital goals as his team went on to run out 9-5 victors. Congratulations to both teams for such a fine sporting game. AUGHAMORE V KILCOURSEY The final match of the night, a top of the table clash, saw Aughamore just about overcome their nearest challengers Kilcoursey on a score-line of 6-4. With captain Conor Dolan in outstanding form Aughamore were always going to be hard beaten. Ciaran Rooney, in goal, put in another massive nights work for his team, with a number of terrific saves in both halves. In midfield Eoin Gavin and Aaron Tuohy were battling hard and winning vital possession with the latter scoring a great goal at a crucial stage in the match. Up front Adam Kelly and Conor Doyle worked their socks off to put the Kilcoursey defence under enormous pressure all night. For Kilcoursey, Aodhan Moran was yet again rock solid, keeping his team in touch all the way. Alex Cornally gave a masterful display of hurling in defence and Chad Tobello broke down numerous Aughamore attacks. Both James Moran and Lorcan Cornally were playing their hearts out at midfield but it was a night where all their goal attempts were somehow just not going in! In attack Mikey Gaffey and Marcus Dalton were flying in the second half but despite their best efforts Clashawaun managed to hold on for the 6-4 win and claim the vital two points. With the last round of games due to take place on Tuesday 3rd March, the three Finals are scheduled for Tuesday 10th March. We would encourage all family members and friends of all the players to come along and support each team on Final night in this very special year for Clara GAA club – celebrating their 125th Anniversary. The Finals will be immediately followed by the presentation ceremony of trophies and medals as follows: A Final - Tom Naughton Cup, B Final - Tommy Dolan Cup and C Final - Ber Cowen Cup. Please check the fixtures in the Post Office window or the GAA Social Centre window. Players should check in with their managers 10 mins before their game starts. PREVIOUS WEEKS Last Tuesday night Clara GAA Club commenced their 125th season with the start of the 4th Annual U8 Tom Naughton indoor hurling league in the Clara GAA social centre. The long serving chairman Michael Sheridan threw in the 1st ball of the night and a big thanks to the Clara GAA committee for all their help to ensure the league is a success. CLASHAWAUN V KILCOURSEY The first game of the night was between Clashawaun and Kilcoursey and ended up an 8-8 thriller with Cormac Delaney, Ronan Newman and Barry Egan scoring crucial goals for Clashawaun. James Moran, Lorcan Cornally and Alex Cornally were the scorers for Kilcoursey, however they have their goalie Aodhan Moran to thank for a top class save to help keep parity. At the end of the game Kilcoursey were also helped with strong play from Mikey Gaffey, Marcus Dalton and Chad Tobello. Dion Conroy had a great game in goal for Clashawaun with Cian Handy and Lochlann Morcombe outstanding in defence and Michael Daly working hard in the forwards ensuring a share of the spoils after a very exciting game. BALLINOUGH V AUGHAMORE The second match was a thriller with Ballinough against Aughamore with Ballinough coming from 7 goals to 1 down at half time to win out the game by 11-8. The 1st half belonged to Aughamore with Captain Conor Dolan, Aaron Touhey, Adam Kelly and Eoin Gavin scoring at will. Ciaran Rooney was doing well in goals and Eoin Gavin and Aaron Cushen were winning their individual battles. However, the 2nd half was a different story with Shane Gavin and Edward Cullen getting on top at midfield and James Rabbette shutting up shop in the goals all helping to turn the tide. Ballinough needed goals and Jack Reynolds was on fire and scored five goals to help his team to a great come from behind win. Indeed Luke Kennedy and Liam Dignam in the backs also played some great hurling and congrats to both teams for such a fine sporting game. WOODFIELD V KILBRIDE The final match of the night saw Woodfield play Kilbride in another high scoring game and was level at half time 4-4, however Woodfield with important goals from captain Christopher Rabbette and Adam McCloskey late in the game won the day for them. They also had Adam O'Keeffe in midfield and Jack Flanagan in goal to thank for this first win. Kilbride started well with captain Ciaran Ennis playing a captains role, Lee Tierney, Conor Minnock and Stephen Roe getting crucial goals. Dylan Taylor was playing his heart out aswell but they found Mark Bennett and Adam Carroll at full back a tough nut to crack. The beginning of the 2nd half was very tight and Kilbrides goalkeeper Patrick Phelan pulled off two great saves, and then Woodfield’s Aaron Wynne and Kilbride’s Conor Doyle swapped goals but Woodfield finished stronger to get the two points. The league continues every Tues night except for Tues Feb 10th when the Bloodbank will be in the GAA centre. The 6 teams will then battle it out in an A Final for the Tom Naughton Cup, B Final for the Tommy Dolan Cup and the C Final for the Ber Cowen Cup.
