U14 FOOTBALLERS ATTEND BLITZ IN SALTHILL 1ST MAR 2009

Clara U14 footballers travelled to Salthill in Galway on Sunday 1st March 2009  to take part in a 4 team blitz. We left clara at 8.30 with 16 of a panel, Our first game was at 11.45 against the Knockmore side. These lads were a physically big team and played with a strong wind in the first half which ended with Knockmore leading by 3-1 to 1-1.

But with the wind on their backs and fire in their bellies the Clara lads fought back and put some lovely moves together and ran out winners by 2-8 to 3-1 . This was a great win for the lads who held Knockmore scoreless in the second half.

We then had a break for 30 minutes and the lads were treated to sandwiches and biscuits and buns, and if there were medals for this they would have won hands down, they certainly eat their fill

Unfortunately this showed in the next game against the home side Salt hill as the lads were slow off the mark to the ball and again playing against a strong wind in the first half conceded a lot of soft goals  We ended up beaten in this encounter by 7-7 to 2-2.

Again we had a 30 minute break and then it was time to take on the unbeaten Westport side. This was probably the best game of the day and the Clara boys put in a fine performance. This was a big Westport side through-out the field but that didn’t help them any when Clara played a good low ball game and worked their possession well up the field.

We were narrowly beaten by one point in this one but showed great heart and skill through-out the game. I could mention numbers 1 through to 16 for lads that played well today as everyone stood up and was counted. I felt very proud watching them but I feel I have to mention 3 young lads who were just superb in all the matches, Kyle Stewart Denis Hackett and Luke Dignam.

Watch out for this team in the coming championship, This was their first time together this year and they did Clara extremely proud both with the play on the field and just as importantly with their good manners and conduct off the field.. So well done lads and the best of luck to you and your manager John Buckley and selector Roy Cronin for the coming year...

On behalf of Clara club I would like to offer sincere thanks to Tony Durkan and the Salthill club for the fantastic reception we received and their wonderful hospitality.  They couldn't do enough for us and our lads were very well looked after. We look forward to returning the compliment later in the year to Salthill.
